Spy Girl

August 13, 2008

She diced, she sliced, she Julia-spied.

Yup. It’s official. Julia Child was part of a World War II international spy ring known as OSS. According to The Associated Press, Child wasn’t the only celebrity to work for an espionage group worthy of Austin Powers 4.

Now that I think about it, she wielded over-sized knives and large fish with convincing authority. Was The French Chef the real inspiration behind The French Connection?

And I always thought spies were supposed to blend in with the crowd. With her voice and her height, she was a pretty memorable physical specimen…

It amazes me that this is suddenly news. It has been no secret that Julia the Great worked for the OSS. The only differnce is that the former spin pegged her as having done only/mianly clerical work — not improbable for those times.

While Julia’s spying isn’t news, the CIA’s admission is. I posted the blog because I find the whole thing incredibly humorous. As Cheryl pointed out, the woman was hard to miss. Six-foot-two and with a voice that begged to be impersonated — you’d think they could find someone a little less conspicuous.

Or maybe they just wanted her to find the secret ingredient in borscht?
