Dana, I rank fake maple syrup right up there with artificial vanilla and insulbrick.

Cheryl, David actually called his mixture "wet walnuts". I, too, thought the name was offputting and decided to rename it. Maybe that was a mistake. BTW -- What a great Friday night tradition.

When I was a kid, my mom used to take us to Friendly's on Friday nights. I'd get a hot fudge Sunday and she would always get maple ice cream with "wet walnuts." I always thought that was a terrible name, but it was delicious, and your recipe makes me think she would have adored it. And I would, too.

No eggs? Astonishing!

WRT maple: I've always loved the real thing. It's those awful fake maple flavours that are so cloying. Maybe when you were younger you were scarred by that nasty stuff.
