My CTV Appearance

by Charmian Christie on October 15, 2009

As promised, here is the video clip of my recent TV appearance. I’m talking to Kyle Christie (no relation) about two quick and easy apple recipes for the local CTV station and trying not to sever a finger with a brand-new, razor sharp peeler. Talking and removing the skin from an apple in the privacy of your home is one thing, but under the lights and pressure of a TV studio? It’s right up there with dancing on light bulbs for Cirque du Soleil.

While I was nervous at first, I knew things would go okay when a set of Swissmar peelers arrived in the mail just a few days before my shoot.  I won these ultra-sharp gadgets from Dinnervibe for submitting my Mango Chutney Chicken recipe. Is that a sign or what?

The segment went well, in part thanks to the sage advice from food writers who have been there and done that. They talked me out of dizzying stripes and wild colours. I neatly avoided “floating head syndrome” by leaving the dark turtle-neck at home. They even guided me to a commercial foundation designed for TV. And yes, that’s me in full make-up AND blush.

While gathering these tidbits of wisdom, one piece of advice stood out. Being pale, I worried about the lights washing me out and wondered if I should layer it on with a trowel. One veteran of the TV guest shot kept me from looking like Bozo the Clown with this piece of advice, “Look a whore in real life. Look like a whore on TV.”

Bonus points if you can guess who said that.

Anyway, fingers crossed I uploaded this thing right. Here goes. Me, a lethal peeler and six minutes of airtime…

Thanks, Anja. I think everyone missed the live version. No one’s home at noon anymore. Thank heavens for the Internet.

You were fantastic, Charmian! Loved all the tips and “can’t go wrongs” and avoiding waste. You looked great, came off as smart and playful, and you seemed more relaxed than the host.

More relaxed than the host? I think he was terrified I’d skin him with my peeler.

Thanks for the kind words, Jill.

You did seem relaxed, and I liked your rapport with the host. Well done! (Watching him say your blog’s url was also the perfect justification to migrate your site over to christiescorner.com, so you should be extra glad that you went through the trouble.)

Also, as non-Canadian, I’d just like to point out how quiet and soothing the whole set was. On American morning TV there’s so much fake excitement and ridiculous over the top smiling it can be really inauthentic and distracting. I liked how straightforward this segment was! Brava!

And here I thought I was grinning like a crazed fool. I think being on the noon show helped with the “calm”.

Loved it! You looked like you have been doing that for years. I can’t imagine talking (on television) and peeling or chopping an apple at the same time. (It looked like it wasn’t so easy for the host either, lol, so I know I’m not the only one.)

We want more Charmian TV! :~D

I never gave peeling an apple much thought until this shoot. I usually get the peel off in one long strip, but not that day.

What people didn’t see was me after the shoot, standing in the side lines, trying to get the core from the second apple out of the corer. As they’re taping the next segment, I’m pushing the thing against the counter, my palm, my stomach… And it’s stuck. And wouldn’t you know it? When it finally released, the core shot half way across the studio. Out of the camera view, thank heavens!

I’m glad you posted this It was fun to see you on TV! I know a real celebrity!!!
Was it your mom who made the lovely “whore” comment !!!

Lori, I’m far from being a celebrity, but it was fun.

And good guess about the quote. My mom would have said, “tramp”. The person I was quoting was none other than Dana McCauley, who kindly spent a good half hour giving me lots of tips. She’s also responsible for warning me about “floating head syndrome”.

Apparently I need an apple corer? Charmian – you need a giveaway ! ;)

Thanks, Katerina. I thought an apple corer would be one of those gadgets I’d never use, but they do come in handy. A give away, eh…? Good thing apple season is long here!
