Mocha Ice Cream

This is the dessert that helped salvage last week’s birthday fiasco. It’s rich, it’s mocha-y, it’s almost like a truffle. It can stand on its own as a decadent treat, or elevate a mediocre cake to the realm of greatness — providing you like the taste of coffee.
Delicious as this may be, whatever you do, [...]

Salted Caramel Ice Cream

This is the long-awaited salted caramel ice cream post. Asked for by Cheryl of 5 Second Rule, with a recipe provided by Cheryl the Backseat Gourmet and tweaked by yours truly.
I know I ranted about caramel in the past. I was critical of undiscerning food industry monkeys who dumped it willy-nilly into any and everything [...]

Blueberry Frozen Yogurt

Looks can be deceiving. This blueberry-raspberry frozen yogurt looks tasty but was chalky and unpleasant. I ended up letting it melt and pouring it over granola for breakfast.
Thinking fresh and simple is best, I’d pureed raspberries and blueberries in the blender with plain yogurt and enough sugar to take the edge off. In theory, it [...]

While the rest of the nation celebrates Canada Day, in our house July 1st is Dominion Day. And Andrew has the t-shirt to prove it. For those who are curious about my husband’s patriotic insistence, check out last year’s blog post.
For those who care about food, it’s ice cream time again. Yes, I’ve pulled out [...]

I just found out my friend Geoff is coming to town this summer. His visit is more than a month away, but I have got to start planning the pie NOW.
You see, I’m into cakes and cookies, but Geoff is all about Pie-Pie-Pie. For my dad, the decision would be easy — Lemon Pie all [...]

Homemade Ranch Dressing

Thumbnail image for Homemade Ranch Dressing

I haven’t bought bottled salad dressing in years. Not only is homemade vinaigrette quick and easy to make, it tastes so much better than the store bought versions, I no longer even bother to look at the dressing aisle. While I enjoy playing with different oils, vinegars and herbs, I started making my own dressing [...]

Classic Vanilla Crème Brûlée

December 30, 2008

Until recently, crème brûlée defied me. I followed the instructions meticulously and ended up serving guests a high-fat vanilla liquid with a soggy sugar crust. Then chocoatiers Dominique and Cindy Duby wrote Crème Brûlée: More Than 50 Decadent Recipes and showed me the errors of my ways.
First mistake: I used a glass dish for the [...]

Crème Fraîche

November 13, 2008

Look what I did!

Pretty isn’t it? This is just my maple squash soup and a drizzle of crème fraîche.
I got so excited by the possibilities, I played with my food. While the heart was fun, it was a bit on the simple side. So I pulled out a toothpick and doodled.
That’s better.

Then I got geometric.

And [...]

Ginger Ice Cream Pie

I live in the birthplace of Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. I learned his poem In Flanders Fields in Grade 5. I still know it by heart, and it still makes me cry. Tonight, Andrew will give a lecture on the horrific battle of Passchendael. We don’t take the sacrifices of the past lightly. In many [...]
